Your SCUBA Diving Course

In general an Open Water Diver course consists of 3 parts:
Academics, Pool Training and Open Water Sessions

Academics - You can complete them online FREE when you sign up for SSI’s Online Training program, and then attend review sessions at your favorite SSI Dive Center.

Pool Training – you will learn all the skills you will be using in the open water in the safety of a pool.

Open Water Sessions – You will complete at least 4 open water dives and have the chance to experience everything you learned in the pool hands-on. (Open water can be defined as an open body of water such as a lake or the ocean).

After successfully completing the Academics, the Pool and Open Water Sessions you will be certified as SSI Open Water Diver – It’s your global license to dive!

What Adventure Dives are offered?PADI eLearning

eLearners will complete sections covering seven Adventure Dives:

  1. Deep
  2. Underwater Navigation
  3. Boat
  4. Night
  5. Peak Performance Buoyancy
  6. Underwater Naturalist
  7. Wreck

Why does the course only cover these dives?

After surveying PADI Members around the world, these dives were identified as the most commonly offered.

Why does the course contain seven sections?

Because the sections are relatively short, it is not inconvenient for eLearners to complete two additional sections beyond the five required for certification. By completing all seven sections, you have more flexibility in the dives you can do for certification throughout the year. Also, by being exposed to additional specialty area, you may be inspired to take the specialty diver courses for both the dives you complete and don’t complete as part of your Advanced Open Water Diver program.

What if I want to do different specialty dives than the ones offered on the online course?

As an eLearner, you will have access to a digital version of the
Adventures in Diving manual online. If you want to do different dives, just read those knowledge development sections and write down the answers to the Knowledge Review questions.
